Another, darker space bird. Photoshop seems to do odd things to illustrator files when It opens them – most noticably making blacks noticably lighter.. hmm.
In my experience it’s better to export from Illustrator as a Photoshop PSD, than to open an Illustrator file in Photoshop. Also, if the blacks get lighter, it sounds like the illustrator document is set to CMYK instead of RGB.
Weird. I Just tried it here with several methods (copy/paste, export as PSD and Photoshop opening the AI file) and black from Illustrator came across fine in all cases: #000000 in Photoshop.

Nah it was RGB, and I have tried exporting as a Photoshop file with not so much luck..
